The KIC 2000 Slim Thermal Profiler is a compact temperature profile measurement system developed for conveyorized thermal processes, especially SMT reflow soldering. The standard nine-channel configuration uses Type K thermocouples to measure temperatures at multiple locations on a PCB assembly as it travels through the oven.

The system records the full thermal history of the product, including initial heating, ramp rate, soak behavior, peak temperature, time above the selected temperature threshold and cooling performance. These measurements help process engineers determine whether the actual PCB temperature profile complies with the selected solder paste or assembly process window.

Depending on the hardware configuration, the KIC 2000 can operate as a data logger or as an RF transmitter. The software displays temperature curves, profile statistics and Process Window Index results, enabling faster process evaluation, oven recipe adjustment and production documentation.

The standard profiler has nine thermocouple channels, while a twelve-channel version is optional. The system is intended for reflow profiling, curing applications and supported wave solder measurements when suitable accessories are installed. Why Thermal Profiling Is Necessary

A reflow oven display normally shows the temperature settings of each heating zone. These settings do not directly represent the temperature experienced by every component, solder joint or PCB location.

Actual product temperature is affected by many variables:

Process Variable Possible Effect
PCB Thickness Thick boards usually absorb heat more slowly
Copper Distribution Heavy copper areas can create cold locations
Component Size Large components may require additional heating time
Component Material Different packages absorb and release heat differently
Board Loading Closely spaced boards can change thermal transfer
Conveyor Speed Higher speed reduces total heating time
Oven Airflow Uneven airflow can create temperature differences
Zone Setpoints Incorrect settings can cause overheating or insufficient reflow
Product Orientation Board direction can affect heating uniformity
Oven Maintenance Blocked airflow or worn equipment can change process performance

Because of these variables, the oven recipe alone cannot confirm that every important point on the assembly remains within the approved process window. Product-level thermocouple measurement is necessary for accurate verification.

Cause

Common Causes of Unstable Reflow Results

Reflow soldering defects often appear when the temperature profile does not match the requirements of the solder paste, PCB material, components or customer process specification.

Typical causes include:

  • Conveyor speed is too fast for heavy or densely populated boards.
  • Peak temperature is below the solder paste requirement.
  • Peak temperature is too high for sensitive components.
  • Time above liquidus is too short or excessively long.
  • Ramp rate is too aggressive and creates thermal stress.
  • Soak time is insufficient for temperature equalization.
  • Temperature differences between PCB locations are excessive.
  • Cooling is too rapid or too slow for the selected process.
  • Oven zones have drifted from the validated production recipe.
  • A new PCB is processed using settings developed for another product.
  • Thermally massive components remain colder than small components.
  • Oven airflow, heating elements or conveyor conditions have changed.
  • Process technicians rely only on oven controller temperatures.
  • Previous profile records are unavailable or difficult to compare.

These conditions may contribute to insufficient wetting, solder balling, component movement, flux exhaustion, voiding, board discoloration, thermal damage, open solder joints or inconsistent production quality.

Solution

Product-Level Temperature Measurement

The KIC 2000 measures the temperature directly on the PCB assembly rather than relying only on oven zone settings. Type K thermocouples are attached to selected test points, such as:

  • Large component terminals
  • Small passive component pads
  • Heavy copper areas
  • Fine-pitch component locations
  • Board edges
  • Board center
  • Top and bottom surfaces
  • Heat-sensitive components
  • Thermally shielded locations
  • Expected hot and cold areas

The profiler travels with the instrumented board through the thermal process. Each selected channel records temperature over time, producing a separate curve for its measurement location.

Profile Analysis

After the profile is collected, the software presents temperature curves and process statistics. The measured values can be compared with the selected process window.

Important profile indicators may include:

Profile Indicator Process Meaning
Maximum Ramp Rate Speed of temperature increase
Preheat Temperature Initial controlled heating condition
Soak Time Time within the selected soak temperature range
Peak Temperature Maximum temperature reached by each thermocouple
Time Above Liquidus Time above the defined solder melting threshold
Cooling Rate Speed of temperature reduction after peak
Channel Delta Temperature difference between measured locations
Process Window Index Overall profile relationship to defined limits

The KIC 2000 software uses the defined specification limits to calculate Process Window Index. A result below 100% is treated as within the selected process window, while a result at or above 100% indicates that one or more limits have been reached or exceeded. Main Advantages

The thermocouple measurement range must not be confused with the allowable internal temperature of the profiler.

The thermocouples can measure high process temperatures, but the recorder electronics must remain within the specified 0°C to 105°C internal operating range. A correctly selected thermal shield is therefore essential when the profiler passes through a heated oven.

Do not operate the profiler without checking:

  • Oven peak temperature
  • Conveyor speed
  • Total oven exposure time
  • Thermal shield type
  • Shield condition
  • Previous profiler temperature
  • Cooling time between repeated profile runs

Curing and Temperature-versus-Time Processes

The KIC 2000 software also supports cure and temperature-versus-time profiling modes. Suitability depends on the process temperature, duration, thermal shield and thermocouple installation.

Wave Solder Applications

Supported wave solder measurements require the appropriate setup and accessories. The KIC documentation lists the Wave Surfer as an optional accessory used to measure wave solder machine performance. How It Works

Step 1: Define the Process Window

Enter or select the temperature limits required by the solder paste, product specification or manufacturing standard.

Typical limits include:

  • Maximum rising slope
  • Soak temperature range
  • Minimum and maximum soak time
  • Peak temperature range
  • Time above liquidus
  • Maximum cooling rate

Step 2: Select Thermocouple Locations

Choose PCB positions representing the expected hot spots, cold spots and critical components.

For an effective profile, include different thermal masses rather than placing every thermocouple on similar components.

Step 3: Attach the Thermocouples

Attach Type K thermocouples securely to the selected measurement points using an appropriate high-temperature attachment method.

Poor attachment can cause inaccurate readings. The thermocouple junction should maintain reliable contact throughout the entire oven cycle.

Step 4: Connect the Channels

Connect each thermocouple to the corresponding profiler input. The KIC procedure uses Channel 1 as the air thermocouple during relevant profiling operations.

Additional channels are connected to the selected product measurement points. ep 5: Confirm Hardware Status**

Before placing the system into the oven, verify:

  • Battery voltage
  • Thermocouple response
  • Profiler internal temperature
  • Communication status
  • Selected channel quantity
  • Correct software configuration
  • Thermal shield condition
  • Oven stability

The software monitors battery voltage and profiler temperature and can prevent a profile from starting when conditions are unsuitable. ep 6: Run the Profile**

Place the protected profiler and instrumented PCB on the conveyor. The system records temperature data while the product travels through the heating, reflow and cooling sections.

RF configurations can transmit live data to the computer. The hardware also stores data internally and retransmits stored information after the run to fill transmission gaps. ep 7: Review the Results**

After the profile is completed, review:

  • Individual thermocouple curves
  • Peak temperatures
  • Ramp rates
  • Soak times
  • Time above liquidus
  • Cooling behavior
  • Temperature differences
  • Process Window Index
  • Oven setpoints
  • Conveyor speed

Step 8: Adjust the Oven Recipe

When the profile is outside the selected limits, adjust one or more parameters:

Profile Problem Possible Adjustment
Heating Too Slowly Increase early zone temperatures or reduce conveyor speed
Ramp Rate Too High Reduce temperature differences between early zones
Insufficient Soak Increase intermediate zone exposure
Peak Too Low Increase final heating zones or reduce conveyor speed
Peak Too High Reduce final zone temperature or increase conveyor speed
Time Above Liquidus Too Short Increase reflow zone exposure
Time Above Liquidus Too Long Increase conveyor speed or reduce high-temperature zones
Large Channel Delta Improve soak balance or review board orientation
Cooling Too Fast Reduce cooling intensity when process allows
Cooling Too Slow Increase controlled cooling when process allows

Final oven adjustments must be based on the solder paste specification, component limitations, PCB construction and the manufacturer's approved process requirements.
